Collaborating since 2008, they work across production design, set decoration and costume design, creating visual environments in which space functions as an essential narrative element rather than a decorative backdrop. Their approach combines architectural precision, painterly sensitivity and dramaturgical thinking, using light, texture, material and detail to shape atmosphere, character and the emotional rhythm of a story.
Their film credits include The Mill and the Cross (Lech Majewski), In Darkness (Agnieszka Holland), You Are God(Leszek Dawid), Ida and Cold War (Paweł Pawlikowski), United States of Love (Tomasz Wasilewski), Suicide Room: The Hater (Jan Komasa), Filip and Chopin, Chopin! (Michał Kwieciński), and Dangerous Men (Maciej Kawalski). Their recent projects include Fatherland by Paweł Pawlikowski and The Doll (Lalka) directed by Maciej Kawalski. Their work has contributed to Academy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated productions, including the Oscar-winning Ida and the Oscar-nominated In Darkness and Cold War.
Their work has received numerous awards and nominations in Poland and internationally. They are three-time recipients of the Polish Film Award (Eagle) for Best Production Design (The Mill and the Cross, Filip and Chopin, Chopin!), and four-time winners of the Gdynia Film Festival Award for Production Design (The Mill and the Cross, In Darkness, Idaand Chopin, Chopin!). Their production design for Ida was also honoured at the Gijón International Film Festival, while United States of Love received recognition at the Ostend Film Festival.
Alongside their film career, Sobańska and Sławiński have created production and costume designs for numerous theatre, opera, ballet and musical productions, as well as for Polish Television Theatre. Their work has been presented by leading cultural institutions and encompasses contemporary drama, classical repertoire and large-scale stage productions.
Since 2019 they have been members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in Los Angeles and are also members of the Polish Film Academy. Alongside their creative practice, they teach Production Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and lead an interdisciplinary Production Design Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, combining professional practice with education and mentoring the next generation of production designers.
