Piotr Sobociński jr.
Piotr Sobociński Jr. is one of Poland’s most acclaimed cinematographers, with a career marked by numerous national and international awards. He is a four-time winner of the Golden Eagle Award for Best Cinematography (seven nominations), a two-time winner of the Polish Society of Cinematographers Award (seven nominations), and a two-time winner at the Camerimage International Film Festival (seven nominations). His work has also been recognized at prestigious festivals worldwide.
Cinematography runs in his blood—he is the son of Piotr Sobociński and the grandson of Witold Sobociński, both graduates of the Cinematography Department at the Łódź Film School. Since 2007, he has been shooting feature films and commercials, collaborating with leading advertising agencies such as Havas, Ogilvy & Mather, Publicis, DDB, and Leo Burnett.
Over the years, Piotr has worked with many distinguished Polish and international directors, including Jan Komasa, Wojciech Smarzowski, Łukasz Palkowski, Paweł Maślona, Piotr Domalewski, Márta Mészáros, and Ricky Rijnecke.
His cinematography for Kos (dir. Paweł Maślona) earned him the Grand Prix in the Polish Films Competition at Camerimage 2024, as well as a nomination for the Golden Eagle Award. The film was one of the most celebrated titles at the 2023 Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, where it won the Golden Lions and several other awards.
Piotr also served as the cinematographer for Piotr Domalewski’s Ministranci (The Altar Boys). His work earned him the Golden Frog at CAMERIMAGE’s Polish Films Competition, along with a Best Cinematography nomination at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. The film centers on a group of rebellious altar boys from a housing-estate parish who secretly bug the confessional. Donning Zorro-like disguises and embracing Robin Hood-inspired justice, they begin helping the vulnerable and punishing “sinners”—until their righteous crusade slips into a perilous game where right and wrong are no longer clear.
The latest feature film shot by Piotr, Anniversary, directed by Jan Komasa, is described as a “provocative” thriller. It tells the story of a close-knit family whose bonds are broken as a movement known as The Change spreads across the nation. The ensemble cast includes Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler, Zoey Deutch, Phoebe Dynevor, Madeline Brewer, Mckenna Grace, and Daryl McCormack.
The feature film “Pojedynek,” directed by Łukasz Palkowski, with Piotr's cinematography is a powerful historical thriller set in 1939, in the aftermath of the Soviet invasion of Poland. The film portrays the dramatic fate of thousands of members of the Polish intelligentsia — doctors, scholars, artists, activists — who were arrested and deported into Soviet captivity. The premiere is planned in 2026.
Member of Polish Society of Cinematographers (PSC), Polish Film Academy, the European Film Academy (EFA) and the American Film Academy.
