Polish cinematographer. Graduate of the Cinematography and Television Production Department of Łódź Film School. Member of the Polish Society of Cinematographers (PSC).
Multiple awarded for the cinematography in short and feature films. His works were screened at numerous film festivals both at home and abroad, including: Cannes Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Rotterdam Film Fesitval, Plus Camerimage, BFI London Film Festival and New Horizons Festival in Wroclaw.
“The Girl With the Needle” directed by Magnus von Horn with Michał's cinematography, starring Vic Carmen Sonne and Trine Dyrholm is competing for the Palme d'Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
"EO" directed by Jerzy Skolimowski with Michał’s cinematography has been nominated for Oscar in the Best International Film category. Michał has been nominated to Polish Film Award in category best cinematography. "Le otto montagne" directed by Felix van Van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch. Michał received LAFCA - The Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Cinematography, National Society of Film Critics for the best cinematography, he was among Best Cinematographers of 2022 according to The Film Stage. Michał has been also nominated to Polish Film Awards for the best cinematography in "EO".
Cinematographer of the feature film "Sweat", directed by Magnus von Horn, awarded at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia (2020) and nominated to the PSC Award (2022) and "Supernova", directed by Bartosz Kruhlik, which received the Special Mention in the Polish Films Competition at the Camerimage Festival (2020). His recent works are the international production "Wolf", directed by Nathalie Biancher.
Michał had finished work on sports drama "Pierce" directed by Nelicia Low starring award-winning Taiwan actors Ding Ning and Tsao Yu-Ning. The story sees the youngster choose to trust and help his dangerous older brother who is released from jail. This means defying their mother’s attempts to bury the brother’s existence and hide the family’s traumatic past.
He was the first Polish commercial filmmaker to be shortlisted for the Shots Awards in the New Director Of The Year category for a music video for Prosto Wear, made as part of the Papaya Young Directors competition. He has been working for clients such as: McDonald’s, Tyskie, T-mobile, Mastercard, Orange, Adidas, ING Bank Śląski, mBank, Biedronka, Raffaello, Obi, Vizir, Żabka, Ketonal, Netto, Beesafe, Melatonina, Sizzer, Born2be, Rak'n'Roll.
Michał is a master of careful, sensitive camera handling. His cinematography is distinguished by minimalism and realism, which emphasize the intimacy of the shot and the emotionality of the characters. The images are perfectly composed, coherent with the narrated story. He uses them to build a suggestive, contemporary world.
For cinematography to feature film "The Girl With the Needle" directed by Magnus von Horn Michał received Golden Frog at EnergaCamerimage 2024 in Main Competition.
This year Michał got nominated for the 2025 ASC Spotlight Award.The movie has been nominated for the 97th Academy Awards® for Best International Feature Film. In Poland it received Silver Lions of the 49th Polish Film Festival. Starring Vic Carmen Sonne and Trine Dyrholm, "The Girl With the Needle" riffs on one of Denmark’s most notorious murder cases to weave a poetic and dark fairytale about the people living on the margins in the aftermath of the First World War. Deadline’s review called the film “an unequivocal and beguiling triumph.”
